Injectable Fillers

dermal fillers patient

Injectable fillers are becoming an increasingly popular method to counteract the natural effects of aging, as well as add definition and volume to some areas of the face. By replenishing hydration to aging skin and filling in wrinkles, injectable fillers can restore a smoother and more youthful complexion through minimally invasive, long-lasting treatments. Fillers are also popularly used by patients of all ages who are interested in creating fuller, poutier lips.

At Levitt Medical Aesthetics, board-certified Dr. Scott Levitt carries the entire line of both Restylane and Juvéderm products, providing patients with a variety of options from FDA-approved and trusted brands. Each specific formulation of Restylane and Juvéderm offers distinct advantages and uses, and Dr. Levitt will work with you to create an individualized treatment plan that matches your aesthetic concerns to the right filler.

What Causes Wrinkles?

Wrinkles and fine lines develop as a result of the natural aging process. Our skin folds and creases each time we make facial expressions, chew, drink, laugh and smile. Over time, distinct movement patterns form as a result of repetitive motions and begin to create deep creases in the skin. Youthful skin has a natural resiliency that allows it to smooth over and bounce back in between facial movements. As skin ages, however, it starts to lose hydration and elasticity, meaning wrinkles and creases formed during facial movements can linger and become fixtures on the face.

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally-occurring sugar molecule that holds up to 1,000 times its weight in water and is responsible for keeping skin hydrated and smooth. Over time, the body’s natural supply of hyaluronic acid begins to deplete, leaving skin vulnerable to wrinkles and sagging. With hyaluronic acid-based injectable fillers like Restylane and Juvéderm, Dr. Levitt can directly supply hyaluronic acid to rehydrate specific areas of the face and counteract wrinkles.

What Fillers Can Treat

When administered by an experienced injector, fillers can soften and smooth aging skin to create a younger appearance. Each type of filler has a different intended use and is typically designed to work on a specific area of the face. As a whole, injectable fillers can treat a wide assortment of common aesthetic concerns, including:

  • Nasolabial folds located around the mouth and nose
  • Marionette lines formed at the corners of the mouth
  • Vertical lip lines, also known as perioral lines
  • Hollow or sunken cheeks
  • Facial asymmetry
  • Chin creases

Injectable fillers can also be used to add definition or extra volume to certain areas of the face, like the lips and cheeks.

Injectable Filler Appointments

Injectable filler appointments are quick, lasting less than one hour on average. At the start of an appointment, Dr. Levitt determines the optimal product to address each of his patients’ cosmetic concerns. He then develops a personalized treatment plan that is tailored to their individual needs and begins injecting the product to match their desired results.

To ensure patient comfort during injectable filler appointments, Dr. Levitt uses one of the strongest topical anesthetics available. In addition, although most patients do not find it necessary, injectable lidocaine can be administered upon request. Almost all of the fillers in the Restylane and Juvéderm lineups already contain lidocaine in their formula, however, and will actively numb the treated areas during injection. Dr. Levitt also uses cannulas, when appropriate, to minimize pain, bruising and risk of complications for his patients.

After injecting the filler, Dr. Levitt massages any lumps to spread the product evenly and ensure smooth, symmetrical results. Once each desired area of the face has been targeted, patients are free to leave their appointment and immediately return to all normal activities.

Side Effects and Results

Side effects following injectable filler appointments are generally mild and consist of pain, bruising, swelling and skin redness at the injection sites. Redness will improve over the course of a few hours, while other side effects may take one to two weeks to completely diminish. Patients are able to resume working and strenuous activities after their appointments but may want to wait 24 hours for noticeable side effects to fade. Otherwise, no downtime is necessary.

Dr. Levitt personally performs all injections at Levitt Medical Aesthetics, ensuring results are consistent and that his patients only receive care from a qualified medical professional. By choosing to use cannulas, Dr. Levitt further minimizes side effects and allows his patients to experience comfortable, safe treatment.

Results following an injectable filler appointment are immediately evident, as the product instantly restores hydration and volume to the targeted area. Swelling and other side effects may temporarily affect the visibility of results, however. Final results develop in about one week, as lingering side effects continue to fade.

Each type of filler has a different lifespan, with most lasting between six months and one year. Some fillers can last for 18 months or even up to two years, and Dr. Levitt will explain the variations between each type during an initial consultation. Regular maintenance appointments are required for sustained results, as the body will gradually absorb the filler over time.
