BBL

bbl broadband light therapy patient

Many unwanted changes can occur to your skin over time. You may see fine lines start to appear, indicating the passage of time. Brown spots and visible veins may belie the time you spent in the sun in your youth without worry about SPF. Maybe you have unwanted hair that has always existed or cropped up rather suddenly in areas like the face, and you don’t want to commit to shaving or waxing to keep your skin smooth and clear.

Dr. Levitt and the staff at Levitt Medical Aesthetics understand these changes can be embarrassing and even distressing, affecting your self-confidence as well as your appearance. Our office is proud to introduce the addition of BBL to our treatment line, a revolutionary system that addresses these concerns with minimal discomfort or downtime involved. With the ability to tailor treatments to the unique needs and desired results of each patient, BBL is a versatile system that can help many of our patients achieve smoother, clearer and more radiant skin.

What is BBL?

BBL stands for broadband light therapy, also known as intense-pulsed light or a photofacial. This treatment delivers wavelengths of light into the underlying dermal layers, restoring and rejuvenation the dermal structure from the inside out. This FDA-cleared, cutting-edge technology gives us the edge to address even stubborn pigmentation and vascular lesions without anesthesia or recovery time. In just a few treatments, you will achieve a complexion that is clearer, smoother and more youthful.

Because the BBL device features different light wavelengths, it offers the following treatment options:

BBL Forever Young

This mode of skin rejuvenation addresses symptoms of aging and sun damage to produce a refreshed, rejuvenated appearance. The light used during this treatment stimulates the body’s own restorative processes, triggering collagen production and cell renewal at a deeper level for a full transformation on the skin’s surface. This device is the only one that has been shown in clinical studies to change the gene expression associated with the aging process to reverse the effects of time on your complexion.

BBL Forever Clear

This multi-step treatment uses blue, yellow and infra-red BBL light to get even challenging cases of acne under control. The blue light is delivered first to eliminate the bacteria that cause acne breakouts. Next, yellow light is applied, which reduces inflammation and diffuse redness common with acne. Finally, the infra-red light stimulates the skin’s natural healing properties to produce a smoother, more radiant complexion.

BBL Forever Bare

Hair removal is another frequent request from our patients, and now they can now request BBL Forever Bare to achieve this goal. This device offers distinct advantages over standard laser hair removal, as the multiple wavelengths of light can cover a more extensive treatment area with fewer missed spots. The light penetrates the hair follicle, causing damage that leads to the shedding of hair. Unlike laser, BBL Forever Bare can treat a wide range of skin tones, making this device one of the most versatile in hair removal today.

Benefits of BBL

With unprecedented versatility, BBL can treat a wide range of skin concerns, including:

  • Skin that has developed a dull luster
  • Early signs of aging like fine lines
  • Pigmented lesions (brown spots)
  • Vascular lesions (broken capillaries, spider veins)
  • Uneven skin texture and tone
  • Unwanted facial and body hair Skin conditions like acne and rosacea

Best Candidates for BBL

BBL is appropriate for men and women that have concerns about the health and appearance of their skin, or for individuals that would like long-lasting hair reduction. While BBL is frequently used to enhance areas of the face, that is not the only place where the device can be safely used. Other treatment areas might include:

  • Neck
  • Chest (decollate)
  • Backs of the hands
  • Shoulders

Forever Bare can be used on nearly any area of the face or body where you have unwanted hair. The device is safe and effective for most skin colors but is not recommended for tanned skin. It is also not advised for women who are pregnant. If you are on photo-sensitive or blood-thinning medications, you will need to talk to Dr. Levitt before undergoing treatment to ensure the procedure will not cause unwanted side effects.

About the Procedure

BBL is performed in our office and does not typically require any anesthesia. Patients having sensitive areas treated or those concerned about their comfort level during treatment can opt to have topical numbing cream first, which takes about 30-45 minutes extra time to allow it to take effect. However, the procedure is quite tolerable for most patients without any anesthetic.

During the procedure, the handpiece glides across the treatment area delivering the light pulses to the appropriate locations. You may feel a warm popping sensation as the light penetrates the skin. Most BBL treatments take just about 20 minutes to complete, depending on the size and number of the areas you want to address during your appointment.

After Your BBL Treatment

Patients are usually able to apply makeup and return to their activities as soon as the treatment has ended. You may notice some redness or flushing of the skin, which should subside within a matter of hours. In the days following your procedure, you might notice brown spots that were targeted become darker. This color change is due to the melanin rising to the skin’s surface. Once that occurs, usually within about two weeks, the spots will peel off, and you will see clearer blemish-free skin.

You will need to carefully protect your skin from the sun for at least a few days since freshly treated skin is particularly vulnerable to bruising. While you will likely see positive results after your very first treatment, patients with more severe damage may discover that a series of appointments tend to work best to achieve optimal results. Dr. Levitt will discuss the right treatment plan with you at your consultation after assessing the condition of your skin and hearing your aesthetic goals for the procedure.
